Upton RFC - Come and join us!
Upton upon Severn RFC, having gained promotion at the end of the 2007-8 season, more than held its own in Midlands West Four (South) last season and finished a very creditable fifth. This season we find ourselves in Midlands West Three (South) - not a promotion but a result of RFU restructuring!
The campaign this season will again be tough and competitive - we may have lost Bedworth and Worcester Wanderers who were promoted, but welcome Redditch and Harbury, both of whom we know well and with whom we always have close matches.
The Club currently fields two XVs each week, and it is hoped that with the advent of the new Junior Section there will be opportunities over the next few years to increase senior player numbers and strength to see the Club returning to a regular three team turnout at weekends. The Club is actively recruiting new players - whether new to the game or returning after a break - so if you feel inclined, please do come down to Upton and get involved. And if you just want to be a social member, that's fine too. Training/coaching takes place at the Club every Tuesday from 7.00 p.m.
You will be made very welcome - just ask for the Coach, Nat Kelsey, or Chris O'Neil and Rob Heeley who jointly manage and organise the first team.
First XV
The Club's First XV combines a set of backs who in their speed, exuberance and try-scoring ability are at least the equal of any other team in our league. Upton's traditional strength lay in its powerful set of forwards, but in the past few seasons it has been the combination of a ball-winning pack and the aforementioned back line that has contributed to some outstanding performances, especially at "Fortress Upton"! We are now beginning to transfer some of this form into our away fixtures.
Second XV
Upton's Second XV plays in the Worcestershire & Herefordshire Merit Table, giving players the opportunity to play competitive rugby most weekends. There are no bars to second-team players moving up to the First XV - the Club has no "elite" squad but operates a simple flat structure where all are equal and team selection is purely on merit and form.
Veterans XV
Upton's Vets' XV plays several games a season against other local clubs' Veterans teams. Many of the current Vets were the original founding members of the Club back in 1981, proving that Rugby is a game for life and a source of lasting friendships! Vets' Rugby starts at age 35 (but the odd more youthful "ringer" has been known to play). Vets' matches are usually played on Sunday mornings - so the committed Vet (or perhaps the Vet who should be committed!) could play twice in a weekend!
