1st XV Match Report: Upton v Droitwich (14-1-2012)
Upton RFC

Upton's New Year continued to be not so good a new year as they let slip a game that potentially they could have won. With possibly their strongest 18 man squad picked Upton were confident they could secure another win that would edge them closer to safety, particularly at home and things certainly looked promising in the first half.

Upton started brightly taking the ball on quickly through the forwards running hard at the Droitwich defensive line, no one more than the departing Jamie Anderson who was playing his last game before departing for Australia.

Upton took an early lead after 5 minutes with a well worked try. Guy Field took clean lineout ball and Upton set up a driving maul. James Gammon at scrum half released the ball early to Matthew Cock and the fly half bamboozled the defence with his handling to slip in winger Dan Aldersey. The speedy winger drew the full back before off loading to open side Tom Dodge who sprinted in from 15 metres out to score. Rob Heeley converted to make it 7-0.

Droitwich though came straight back at Upton and reduced the early arrears with a penalty before scoring a converted try to make the score 7-10.

Droitwich were then reduced to 14 men when their number 8 was sin binned for entering the breakdown from the side and from the resultant penalty Alex Pimlow kicked into the corner to set up a lineout for the home side. Field once took the ball cleanly and the Upton pack drove the Droitwich pack over the line for a second try and a second try for Dodge. Heeley missed the conversion from wide out.

Upton should have stretched their lead further when they broke out of their own half and with Pimlow racing down the left wing but somehow he and Aldersey failed to take advantage of the two on one situation and the ball went into touch. This was a real turning point as from the lineout inside their own 22 Droitwich ran the ball wide and went almost the length of the field before Alex Flower was adjudged to be killing the ball at the ruck and was sin binned. Droitwich then spent the next 9 minutes of the half battering the Upton defence and with the last play of the half they scored a try through their forwards which was converted to make the score 12-17 at half time.

Flower rejoined the fray a minute into the second half and for the first 20 minutes the scores remained the same but Upton just weren't seeing enough ball and when they did they eventually gave away a penalty that enabled Droitwich to kick to the corners. It was fair to say Upton lost the ref in the second period as every decision went against them. Droitwich extended their lead with another penalty with 15 minutes to go to make it 12-20 and then finished the game off when Upton fell asleep. After giving another penalty away on half way Droitwich once again kicked the ball into touch 10 metres from Upton's goal line. However Upton, expecting Droitwich to set up a lineout drive, were not awake as the visitors took a quick one and ran in an easy third converted try to make it 12-27.

The last 5 minutes saw Upton try and salvage a bonus point with a converted try, but knowing they would at least need another score this proved fruitless as they couldn't find the gap to score.
