U9 Match Report: Tewkesbury V Upton (26-10-2008)
Upton RFC

Upton, with a couple of players on holiday, took the bare bones of a team to their first away fixture of the season. The players were relishing another chance to play contact rugby and started enthusiastically but were almost too eager. Tewkesbury retained the ball better, and soon put their speedster into space. In the blink of an eye he ran through to score for Tewkesbury.

Although several Upton parents became apprehensive, solid tackling from Jack Walford and Bobby Taylor helped turn the tide. With more ball Jack Avery was able to set up a series of attacks. George Pawson received one such pass and ran hard and straight and scored in the right corner. From the restart Luke Bartlett, on debut, won the ball and put Liam Gleeson into space. Liam, proving he is a prop in name only, tore up the left flank to score. A welcome 10-5 lead at half time.

Positive refereeing and good use of the advantage law allowed both teams plenty of chances to run. Upton's tackling did not let up as the second half progressed. The passing and running began to consistently threaten the Tewkesbury defence. In the last quarter, William Hood found space and a neat step inside took out the last defenders to sore Upton's third try. Moments later Hood pounced on a loose ball and off loaded for Will Mealings to shrug of two defenders and score. A great team effort with all the players making strong contributions.
