1st XV Match Report: Upton V Bedworth (29-11-2008)

Upton started this game having just been awarded the points from the Southam game from late September which placed them right at the top of the league with the big boys. Unfortunately that was all that really went right for them in this game.

Upton has defied the odds with their small squad this season at a level of rugby they've never played at before and are competing with the better sides. However Bedworth showed their greater maturity in this game to edge the victory.

Upton took an early lead when Chris O'Neil finished a length of the field move and Dan Keyte converted (7-0), however the fly half injured himself taking the conversion and despite trying to run it off had to leave the field early. From that point on Upton lacked control and rarely threatened the score board again.

Bedworth on the other hand played a very simple game with their fly half continually pinning Upton back in their 22 and feeding off their mistakes. Despite this thought they only managed a penalty to make the half time score 7-3.

Upton's squad was put under more pressure when they lost number 8 Oli Banwell to concussion at the start of the half and prop Russell Price to injury soon after.

Bedworth capitalised on Upton's disorganisation to score two converted tries to make the score 7-17.

Upton tried to throw the kitchen sink at Bedworth and managed a late score from Alex Pimlow who weaved around most of the Bedworth team to run in from 60 yards. The quick drop goal conversion was missed and as Upton raced back for the kick off the referee ended the game.

This week Upton faces a massive battle at leaders Worcester Wanderers.
