U13 Match Report: Upton V Longlevens (27-01-2008)
Upton RFC

First of all I'd like to thank all those who came to the match, as ever the enthusiasm of our players is great to see. I'd also like to thank the supporters too, your presence is very much appreciated. For those who didn't get much of a game please be assured that we have a number of games coming up (one every other week until the end of the season) and you will get your chance in the next match.

For the first 10 minutes of the match our ball handling wasn't up to the standard that I have come to expect, and it took us a while to find our feet. This is not really surprising when taking into account the lack of opportunity we have had for the past six weeks.

I'm pleased to say that we did tighten up our play, and then began to keep much more possession of the ball, and through very hard work, even gained much needed territory. But despite this possession and territory, we weren't able to break down their very strong pack.

I think it was a surprise to us all when they got a break away try, and I think this knocked us back a bit. But we soon fought back, and we were so close to getting back into the lead, even to the point of crossing the try line. But the try did not come and I feel it would have been a very important score.

Their pack showed their strength in the scrum, pushing us off the ball a number of times, but we dug in deep and managed to fight back. As always we put in numerous big tackles, and showed plenty of quick hands, and some really great off loads. The crowd was then rewarded with a fantastic try.

Our failing was that we didn't use the skill that we know we have in our backs. The forwards did all of the hard work in drawing in the defence, and building a platform, but then when we needed to spread the ball wide it didn't come. Some of this has to be credited to the opposition, who didn't give us space, and were very quick to close us down. However, perhaps we could have been a bit more aware, but I'm sure that with more regular training sessions that this can be worked on, and resolved .

Despite the score line, it was great to get out playing rugby again after such a long break, and the pitch and weather couldn't have been better. Furthermore, despite being a very hard game, there were no-injuries or complaint. The attitude of both teams was commendable, and everyone worked their utmost in a hard, but clean, competition.
