1st XV Match Report: Dudley Wasps v Upton (20-10-2007)
Upton RFC

Upton travelled to the very north of the county to take on a Dudley side that have gained promotion steadily over the last four years or so. Dudley like Upton plays in the 'south' section of the league but for some strange anomaly we travelled further north than teams who play in the 'north' section!

Upton kicked off having been forced into making seven changes and four positional changes from the previous week due to unavailabilities and the early minutes were used to get to fully know a new set of team mates and to come to terms that Dudley Wasps are not invincible. After few minutes defending No 10 Marek Willis moved the ball close to the Dudley line and following maul scrum half Pimlow jinked and outmanoeuvred the opposition to score the opening try after 10mins

Soon Dudley scored a long range penalty as both teams found difficulty in understanding the 'up and coming' referee from a neighbouring area

Upton won possession on the half way and moved the ball out to centre Richard Mills who sold a perfect dummy to throw the defence and run in a try under the posts and Willis converted

With half time approaching Upton were in the ascendancy and were mounting another attack through their backs when a long final pass was intercepted by full back Williams who just beat the out of position Upton cover and Williams converted his try to leave the half time score at

It was evident that the referee was suffering with a leg injury and 5 minutes after the restart he finally gave way to another more experienced referee who had just finished officiating an earlier starting game. It took a while for Upton to come to terms with the new ref's style so much so that in the next 20 mins Dudley were able to score a penalty and an unconverted try taking them to

Upton were determined that they were not going to lose and would make this one count for Justin (Morts)Morton, a stalwart club member who sadly lost his battle with cancer last Tuesday at only 35 years of age. Upton got to grips with the better style of refereeing, the forwards did their bit with the likes of Oli Jones and Matt Bookham putting in the big hits to secure the ball before the backs could make their mark. Richard Mills put in another good break but Upton's next points came when Marek Willis rounded the defence for a try. With two minutes to go Alex Pimlow again outpaced the defenders to run in from halfway for his second try under the posts and Willis duly converted
