1st XV Match Report: Chaddesley v Upton (03-11-2007)
Upton RFC

Upton, with a free week in their league commitments, travelled to Chaddesley to play in the first round of the North Midlands Vase. Upton had a familiar line in the backs but the scrum was vastly changed from last week. Chaddesley are rebuilding and it was known before the match that they have some good young players who are learning fast.

Chaddesley kicked off and pinned Upton close to their line for nearly 10mins but they could not cross the line nor put the ball between the posts. Upton soaked up the pressure and then broke free through a good run by right wing Richard Mills and when Chaddesley infringed, Dan Keyte converted the penalty to give the lead

From the restart Upton were under siege again but they soaked up the pressure before clearing their lines through a good kick or good ball carrying. Upton had to wait until the 30th minute before they scored again. This time Marek Willis ran a good angle to score a try which Keyte converted

Before half time Chaddesley converted a penalty but Upton went further ahead when Mills finished of a good backs move

Chaddesley's young 'guns' came back at the restart and soon scored a penalty and then scored a good driving try by young No8 Rob Burton following a pick up at the back of a set scrum. It was converted

There is a saying that the best time to score is immediately after the opposition have just done so and this is what Upton did. Skipper Chris O'Neil picked up a long clearance kick on Upton's 10 metre line and then proceeded to go diagonally across the field to run through tackles and out pace the cover. Willis converted

Hooker Paul Pickering then increased Upton's lead with try wide out following some good driving and support work by Upton's forwards for whom Oli Jones and Nigel Arismandez did sterling work all afternoon

Chaddesley were not finished and Jones intercepted a pass at the restart to score a converted try

The final points in this cup game went to Upton with another try from Mills following speedy approach work by Alex Pimlow

Upton move into the next round and were pleased to grab a win but Chaddesley are to be congratulated for their 'never say die' attitude and success will come. Upton are back on league duty next Saturday, Nov 10th with a visit to Manor Park, Nuneaton.
