1st XV Match Report: Upton v Rugby St Andrews (01-03-2008)
Upton RFC

Upton's eagerly awaited title decider with Rugby St Andrews ended with the visitors almost certainly securing the title. In fact even if Upton had won the side from Warwickshire would still have to had lost one more game this season.

Despite this Upton had prepared for this game for many weeks as their impressive run since Christmas had developed.

Playing against the wind in the first half Upton struggled to get into the opponents half however when they ran the ball they always made large yards, which showed promise for the game. However Rugby scored first with a penalty kick and then scored their only try after a mistake by Upton. From a quick 22 drop out the ball bounced horribly back wards with the assistance of the wind. Blind side Matt Bookham gathered and spotting an opportunity to run tried to offload only for the opposition second row to intercept and run 20 metres to score in the corner. This was converted to give Saints a 10-0 half term lead.

The Second half started with Upton hooker Heeley and the opposition tight head in the bin for a 'slight disagreement'. This proved to be to Upton's advantage as they gained the upper hand in the scrums. From one such set piece Upton moved the ball wide with their pacey backs. Held up the impressive No.8 Lynch took the ball on and offloaded to tight head Dave Hunt who stormed over from 10 yards. Dan Keyte converted to make the score.

However despite territorial advantage for the remainder of the game Upton just couldn't get another score as Saints dominated the set piece. As Upton tried to run the ball at every opportunity mistakes crept in and the visitors were able to pin Upton back towards their line with frantic kicks downfield. As Upton became frustrated they conceded penalties and the impressive and long Rugby kicker knocked over two late penalties for a final score of.
